You see different names for this: band collar, mandarin collar, Mao collar and sometimes farmers collar. In stores, these terms are often used interchangeably, while the exact shape can differ per shirt.

What is a band collar?

A band collar consists of a narrow strip of fabric around the neck without folded collar points. The result is calmer and more minimalist than a classic shirt.

What is a mandarin collar?

The term mandarin collar is often used for a short, stand-up collar that does not completely overlap at the front. The name historically refers to East Asian clothing influences, but in modern men's fashion it is used quite broadly.

And what do people mean by Mao collar?

Mao collar is often used in European fashion as an informal name for a standing band collar. The term is not as precise as it sounds and is applied differently by brands.

Is a shirt without a classic collar formal?

Band collars are available in all kinds of materials. Cotton, linen and blends are common, but the exact material should always be determined from the label.

A thin shirt works well in spring and summer; a heavier model can actually look nice under knitwear or a jacket.

Vintage specimens

Labels and cuts can vary greatly on second-hand shirts with a stand-up collar. Don't automatically call a specimen 'Mao' or 'mandarin' if the label only shows a raised band.
