Jacket or blazer: what is the difference?

What is the difference between a jacket and a blazer? The words are often used interchangeably in stores, web shops and even by brands. Yet there is a practical distinction that helps when buying and combining. Especially with second-hand clothing, it is useful to not only look at the label, but at how the jacket is intended.

What is a jacket?

In Dutch, colbert is a broad name for a dress men's jacket with lapels and buttons. A jacket can be part of a suit, but it can also be designed as a separate jacket. The old explanation that a jacket always goes with matching trousers is therefore too simple.

If the jacket is made of exactly the same fabric as matching trousers, we usually call it a suit jacket or suit jacket. That is more specific than the general word jacket.

What is a blazer?

A blazer is also a dress jacket, but traditionally intended to be worn separately. The classic blazer is often dark blue and can have metal or striking buttons. Historically, there have been clear differences between blazers and other jackets, but in modern men's fashion, brands now use the word 'blazer' much more broadly.

That's why you can't always rely on the product name. Rather, look at the fabric, buttons, cut and whether there are matching trousers.

And what is a suit jacket?

A suit jacket goes with trousers of the same fabric, color and weave. Together they form a suit. That does not mean that you should never wear such a jacket separately, but some suit jackets look a bit formal or unfinished without the matching trousers. That largely depends on the fabric, design and construction.

A loose jacket or blazer is usually easier to combine with jeans, chinos or different trousers.

How do you recognize the difference in practice?

• Look for matching trousers. The exact same fabric and color usually indicate a suit.
• Look at the buttons. Metal or strongly contrasting buttons are more likely to match a classic blazer.
• Look at the fabric. A pronounced check, tweed or structured fabric often works well as a loose jacket.
• Pay attention to the cut. Some suit jackets are clearly more formal and tighter constructed than casual jackets.

When do you wear a jacket?

A loose jacket is ideal when you want to look neat without immediately wearing a full suit. Think of a dinner, drinks, work, a wedding with a more informal dress code or just a smart daily outfit.

Common mistakes when choosing a loose jacket

A common mistake is that men mainly look at the brand or size on the label. With a second-hand jacket, the ratio between shoulders, chest and length is more important. A jacket can technically be 'your size' and still look wrong because it is too short, too loose or too tight.

The combination with the pants also makes a big difference. A smooth dark suit jacket over worn jeans can clash, while a softer tweed or structured jacket works very naturally. Therefore, always look at the formality of both garments.

How do you combine a jacket or blazer?

Start with one calm starting point. A dark blue blazer works well with gray, beige, denim and white.
