Quarter-zip men: this is how you wear a sweater with a short zipper in style

The quarter zip for men is a piece of clothing that falls somewhere between a sweater, polo and smart casual top. In Dutch you also come across descriptions such as sweater with short zipper, quarter-zip sweater or simply zip sweater. Brands also sometimes use the term half-zip. In practice, these names are mixed up, but the principle is the same: a knitted or jersey top with a short zipper at the neck.
This makes the quarter-zip particularly easy to combine. It can look sporty with jeans and sneakers, but also surprisingly dressed with a shirt, trousers and leather shoes. For a Men's Room wardrobe, that is exactly what is interesting: one piece of clothing that can handle multiple levels of formality without becoming stiff.
What exactly is a quarter zip?
A quarter-zip has a stand-up or half-high collar with a short zipper in the front. The zipper does not run completely like a vest or jacket, but stops somewhere on the upper part of the chest. The exact length of the zipper varies per brand and model.
The name quarter zip often used for shorter zippers; half-zip for models where the zipper runs a little further down. However, these terms are not always used consistently in stores and product titles. What is especially important for the wearer is how the model fits, how high the collar is and how thick the material is.
Why does a quarter zip work so well in a men's wardrobe?
The power is in the middle position. A regular sweater is casual. A shirt is immediately neater. A turtleneck sweater has a completely different look. The quarter zip is in between and can adapt to the rest of the outfit.
He remains relaxed with a T-shirt underneath. With an Oxford shirt it becomes more classic. With trousers and loafers he moves towards smart casual. This makes it especially useful for men who want to be well-groomed without wearing a jacket or suit every day.
In our guide to the basic wardrobe for men we consciously mention knitwear as one of the building blocks of a versatile wardrobe. A quarter zip is a strong example of this.
1. Quarter zip with a shirt: classic without being stiff
This is perhaps the most Men's Room-like combination. Wear a thin or medium weight quarter-zip over a white, light blue or striped one shirt. Allow the shirt collar to fall inside or just over the neck of the sweater, depending on how the collar is shaped.
A button-down collar is often particularly easy to use, because it remains compact and is less likely to jump in all directions. Combine with gray or navy trousers for a neat look, or with dark jeans if you want it more informal.

2. Quarter zip with T-shirt and jeans: the simple casual combination
For everyday use, you don't need a shirt underneath at all. A simple T-shirt with a quarter zip and dark jeans is calm, masculine and easy.
The trick is mainly in the proportions. A T-shirt that is too loose and extends below the collar quickly makes it look sloppy. A calm, fitted T-shirt works better.
You can't go wrong with a dark blue, green or gray quarter-zip and a pair of neat jeans. Underneath you can wear sneakers, suede loafers or boots, depending on the season.

3. Quarter zip with trousers: smart casual without a suit
A quarter zip with trousers is one of the easiest ways to look smart without being formal. Thin knitwear in particular works well here.
For example, choose a navy quarter-zip on gray trousers, dark green on beige or brown, or burgundy on dark blue. With leather shoes or loafers everything is taken care of immediately.
One trousers therefore does not automatically have to belong to a suit jacket. When worn loose, it has many more uses.
4. Can a quarter-zip be worn under a jacket?
Yes, but not every model is suitable for this. A thick, coarse quarter-zip under a jacket can give too much volume at the shoulders, chest and sleeves. A thinner model in fine knit works much better.
Make sure that the jacket still closes smoothly and that the sleeves do not become tight. The high collar of the quarter-zip gives a slightly sportier look than a shirt, but can work nicely with a softly constructed jacket, tweed or corduroy.

5. Quarter zip under a jacket
The quarter-zip also works well as a midlayer under a trench coat, leather jacket or wool coat. The stand-up collar fills the neck nicely without you immediately needing a scarf.
Under a leather jacket it gives a classic weekend look; Under a neat coat the look becomes a little dressier. Pay particular attention to thickness. If both the quarter zip and the jacket are heavy, the outfit can become bulky.

How far do you open the zipper?
That depends on what you wear underneath and how the collar falls.
- Completely or almost closed: sleek, calm and warmer. Especially good without a shirt or in cold weather.
- Slightly opened: usually the most relaxed position. The collar loosens and a shirt or T-shirt becomes subtly visible.
- Wide open: can work, but gives a sportier effect faster. With a shirt, things can get messy if too many layers are visible.
There is no fixed centimeter rule. Pay particular attention to the line of the collar and whether the layers underneath remain calm.
Which colors are easiest?
For a first quarter zip, navy, gray, dark green, cream and brown are particularly useful. They easily combine with denim, wool, corduroy and most shirts.
Bordeaux and rust are nice second colors if you already have a few quiet basics. Bright blue, red or bold patterns can be interesting if the rest of the outfit remains simple.
A good rule of thumb: the more noticeable the quarter zip, the calmer the shirt and trousers should be.
Wool, cotton or something else?
The material largely determines how the quarter-zip fits and when you wear it.
Wool is warm and can look both casual and dressed up. Fine merino wool is usually smoother than coarse knitted wool.
Cotton often feels lighter and sportier and can be pleasant in spring and autumn.
Cashmere, lambswool and blends can be softer or warmer, but the label does not tell everything about quality. Also look at the density of the knitting, shape retention and wear.
With second-hand clothing, the following always applies: only record a material if the label actually confirms it.
How should a quarter zip fit?
A quarter zip does not have to fit tightly around the body. There should be enough room to wear a T-shirt or shirt underneath without every fold showing.
Pay particular attention to:
- the shoulder seam should fall logically around the shoulder;
- the chest should not pull at the zipper;
- the sleeves should be long enough without bunching excessively;
- the hem should not be so tight that the sweater rides up continuously;
- the collar should hold its shape and not be slack or stretched.
If you are unsure between very tight and slightly looser, knitwear often benefits from more room to move.
What should you look for with a second-hand quarter-zip?
There are a few places in used knitwear that require extra attention.
Check the zipper. Open and close it completely. A zipper that malfunctions does not necessarily have to be a disaster, but a damaged tooth or worn runner can be more difficult to repair.
View collar and cuffs. There you are often the first to see whether a sweater has lost its shape.
Check armpits and elbows. These are areas where thinning, felting or wear may be visible sooner.
Look at pilling. Slight pilling can be normal with certain yarns and is sometimes easy to remove. Heavy wear and thin spots are another matter.
Check the washing label. Especially with wool or mixed materials, it is wise to follow the manufacturer's maintenance instructions.
You can find more general checkpoints here recognize quality in second-hand men's clothing.
Quarter-zip, polo or regular sweater?
These three each have their place.
One polo is lighter and sportier. A regular round neck is more neutral and disappears more easily under a jacket. A quarter-zip has more structure around the neck and therefore gives a dressed up look more quickly.
So you don't have to choose which one is "best". They solve different situations.
Quarter-zip and spencer: same wardrobe, different effect
One spencer also works well over a shirt, but leaves the arms free and looks more distinctly classic. A quarter zip is more practical as a full sweater and feels a little sportier.
If you like layered men's fashion, you can use both in the same wardrobe. See also spencer men wear.
Why the quarter-zip fits so well with De Herenkamer
For us, the attraction is not a temporary trend. The quarter-zip fits the area where many men feel most comfortable: neat, but not overdressed; classic, but not stiff; comfortable, but not sloppy.
It therefore fits well with the rest of a wardrobe with shirts, trousers, jeans, jackets, leather jackets and good shoes.
That is also why we do not see it as a separate fashion item, but as part of a complete outfit. In our guide put together a second-hand outfit for men we explain how to build from one strong garment.
Which quarter zip would you choose first?
If you don't have one yet, we would start with a plain style in navy, gray or dark green and a weight that you can wear alone or over a shirt.
You can then expand with color, a coarser knit, a special structure or a clearer vintage model. Just like with a jacket or waistcoat, not every quarter zip has to do everything. The first may be especially versatile; the next one may have more character.
