Combining a shirt with a jacket or suit: this is how the outfit works

How do you combine a shirt with a jacket or suit? The best combinations are usually not created by complicated rules, but by balance. Fit must be correct, colors must support each other and patterns must not all require attention at the same time. Choosing becomes much easier with a few practical principles.
Start with the fit of the shirt
A shirt under a jacket should fit neatly without large amounts of fabric at the waist and sleeves. That doesn't mean you automatically need slim fit. A well-fitting regular fit can look just as sleek.
The buttons should not pull on the chest or stomach and the shoulders should fall logically. Read our guide slim fit, regular fit or loose fit shirt for the difference between the cuts.
White shirt: the safest basic
A white shirt almost always works under dark blue, gray, brown and many checked jackets. It provides peace and lets the jacket play the leading role.
White can be a strong choice, especially with a distinctive vintage jacket or tweed, because you do not add another pattern.
Light blue: slightly softer than white
Light blue combines particularly easily with navy, gray, brown and beige. It feels less formal than bright white but remains smart enough for work, dinner or a suit.
With a brown shoe and a dark blue jacket, it is one of the simplest classic men's combinations.
Striped shirt under a jacket
Stripes are great, especially under a plain jacket. The busier the jacket, the calmer the stripe should usually be. A fine blue-white stripe under navy or gray is much easier than a wide contrasting stripe under a large check.
Checked shirt: when does it work?
A checkered shirt goes well with a casual jacket, tweed or structured fabric. Under a very formal suit, a coarse casual check can be less obvious.
If you combine two patterns, make sure they differ in scale. For example, a fine shirt check can work with a larger check in the jacket.
Print shirt under a jacket
A print shirt can be very strong under a plain jacket. Choose one or two colors from the print that are reflected in the jacket or the rest of the outfit.
With a bold 1970s shirt , a quiet jacket is usually better than a second large pattern.
Which collar fits under a jacket?
Most classic collars work. A pointed collar or Kent collar can be used in a wide range of applications. A button-down feels a little more informal and goes well with a loose jacket. Cutaway and wider collars can actually look nice with a tie.
More important than the name is that the collar remains neat and does not disappear under the jacket or ride up.
With or without a tie?
A suit for a formal occasion requires a tie often logical. You can leave it out with a loose jacket.
If you wear a tie, pay attention to the relationship between the collar and lapels. A very wide vintage tie under a narrow modern jacket can be unbalanced; with a wider vintage jacket, the same tie can be perfect.
Shirt and suit: keep it calmer
A full suit has more formality in itself than a separate jacket. White, light blue and fine stripes are therefore safe choices. If you want to wear a pattern, keep the rest of the outfit simple.

Shirt and loose jacket: more freedom
With a loose jacket or blazer you can vary much more: Oxford shirts, vintage prints, checks and open collars all work.

How much cuff should be visible?
With a classic outfit you often see a small piece of shirt cuff under the jacket sleeve. There is no millimeter rule that applies to every arm and every model; It is more important that sleeve lengths are in proportion and that both sides fall equally.
What if the shirt has too much fabric?
A shirt that bulges significantly at the waist can look uneasy under a jacket. Then try a different fit or a brand with a different cut. Do not automatically go one size smaller if the collar and shoulders are no longer correct.
Color combinations that almost always work
- Dark blue jacket + white shirt: classic and sharp.
- Dark blue jacket + light blue shirt: softer and easy.
- Gray suit + white or light blue: calm and formal.
- Brown/tweed jacket + cream or light blue: warm and classic.
- Checked jacket + plain shirt: let the jacket do the talking.
And if you want to be casual?
Wear the shirt open at the neck and combine a loose jacket with jeans or chinos. In our guide can jeans be worn under a jacket? we explain which jackets work best with denim.
Try it on as a complete outfit
A shirt can look beautiful on its own and still not work under a certain jacket. Therefore, always try on everything: shirt, jacket, trousers and possibly a tie. You only really see proportions when everything comes together.
